It's amazing what a live audience, 30 years and some subtle changes to pacing can do. The unique bond of the performer and audience can create something like magic and can never be assumed. I once performed a scene in a play where I had everyone sobbing and seething like it was the end of the world; the very next week people in the audience were laughing so hard I had to hold for unexpected laughter on these exact same lines like it was the funniest they'd ever experienced. The recorded moment can't capture that energy. Each live performance is only for that moment, forever lost to the ether but we are better for it.
